Can I Shrink Wrap My Own Boat?

While some forms of boat maintenance should be performed by repair professionals, lots of boaters take the DIY approach when it comes to shrink wrapping. Having the right boat shrink wrap supplies is key to making the process quick and effective.

If you go the DIY route, be sure to exercise care and caution when performing each step. The more secure the protective layer of shrink wrap is around the boat, the lower the chance that the vessel will sustain weather damage while in storage.

What Type of Plastic Is Used for Boat Shrink Wrap?

Most boat shrink wrap material consists of low-density polyethylene, a form of plastic. This form of plastic is highly resistant to the elements, including rain and snow. It’s also resistant to damage from chemicals and can even ward off UV rays to prevent sun bleaching and drying, which can be a major issue when storing a boat outside.

This type of film will also conform to the unique facets of a boat with the application of heat, which creates a sturdy protective shell around the vessel.

Can You Use a Regular Heat Gun to Shrink Wrap a Boat?

It’s best to choose heat guns designed specifically for marine needs, as these models will be able to achieve the temperatures necessary to fully secure the shrink wrap to your boat.

For instance, temperatures of at least 200 degrees Fahrenheit for the wrap to respond appropriately. However, keep in mind that some higher-end heat guns can reach temperatures as high as 1,100 degrees. These guns can make for a more efficient shrink-wrapping process thanks to the increase in temperatures, but they must be used carefully to avoid melting the wrap while safeguarding your boat during the off-season.
